Science & Method

Dimensions that open a deeper conversation.

The Big Five describes personality through broad dimensions. People express different combinations and degrees of these tendencies across the situations of life.

Why the Five-Factor Model

The strength of a scientific foundation.

The Big Five is a widely researched framework in personality psychology. Its value lies in dimensional understanding and an evidence base that can be examined.

01

A dimensional model

Five broad factors reveal different degrees and combinations of tendencies.

02

An accumulated research foundation

Scientific studies examine the structure of traits and their associations with life and work.

03

A framework for development

Profile, history, objectives and context guide a more precise development conversation.

Openness to Experience

How a person engages with new ideas, imagination and experience. Consider the situation alongside preferences for familiarity or exploration.

Evidence about the scientific model

Research on a meaningful scale.

Zell & Lesick’s 2022 synthesis examined associations between Big Five traits and performance.

54meta-analyses synthesized
554,778participants reported in the synthesis

These figures describe scientific research, not Five Factor clients or guaranteed outcomes. Findings concern trait–performance associations and do not demonstrate that taking an assessment causes career or business gains.

01

A dimensional understanding

A profile locates tendencies along continua. A dimension is not a fixed type, a measure of someone’s worth or a complete account of a person. Interpretation includes history, goals and environment.

02

Model, instrument and application

Research supporting the Big Five model, evidence about a particular questionnaire and the quality of an application process are distinct questions. Evidence for one instrument does not automatically establish the properties of another.

03

Interpretation in context

The Five Factor approach brings together the profile, personal history, current demands, objectives and relevant observations. Development connects interpretation with priorities, behavioral practice and review.

The application approach

From personality data to development.

Understanding becomes useful when profile, context and objectives are connected.
